Netflix is gearing up to premiere its latest Indian comedy, Wild Wild Punjab, on Wednesday. This highly anticipated movie, produced by Luv Films and featuring Varun Sharma, Patralekha, and more, promises a mix of comedy and chaos.
The film follows four friends who crash an ex-girlfriend’s wedding, leading to a series of chaotic events. Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming movie.
What is Wild Wild Punjab’s release date on Netflix?
Wild Wild Punjab is scheduled to hit the screens of Netflix subscribers on Wednesday, July 10, 2024. With a runtime of 1 hour and 49 minutes, the film delves into the story of four friends and their unplanned escapade to a wedding that quickly turns into an adventure of mishaps and revelations. The trailer, released in June 2024, teases a blend of humor, emotional moments, and the typical pandemonium one can expect at an Indian wedding not going as planned.
The core of Wild Wild Punjab revolves around Rajesh Khanna, or ‘Khanne’ (played by Varun Sharma), who will be seen reeling from a fresh breakup. In a bold move, Khanne decides to crash his ex-girlfriend’s wedding. That too, accompanied by his close friends, to declare he’s over her — a plan fraught with comedic potential.
According to Netflix, “A heartbroken Rajesh Khanna, aka Khanne (Varun Sharma), is determined to confront his ex at her wedding, ignoring the groom and wedding procession, to declare: ‘I am over you!.’”
However, that’s not all. The streaming giant adds, “His motley crew of friends—Maan Arora aka Arore (Sunny Singh), Gaurav Jain aka Jainu (Jassie Gill), and Mr. Honey Singh aka Honey Paaji (Manjot Singh)—hatch a plan. They embark on a breakup road trip, where more goes wild than right. Radha (Patralekhaa) and Meera (Ishita Raj) join them on this adventure across Punjab’s vibrant yet chaotic world, helping Khanne find closure.”
The film was first announced at the Next on Netflix India event in late February. Produced by Luv Films, known for hits like Pyaar Ka Punchnama, this is their first Netflix Original Film. Directed by Simarpreet Singh, making his feature debut, the film features a screenplay by Harman Wadala and Sandeep Jain.
Wild Wild Punjab cast: Varun Sharma, Patralekha & more
Known for his role in the Fukrey franchise, Varun Sharma stars as the heartbroken Khanne. Jassie Gill, both a singer and actor, takes on the role of Jainu. Meanwhile, Manjot Singh, another Fukrey alum, plays Honey Paaji. Joined by Sunny Singh, a frequent collaborator with Luv Ranjan, who plays Arore. Furthermore, Patralekhaa and Ishita Raj round out the main cast.
Varun Sharma opened up about his character, describing Khanne as volatile and constantly tipsy. “The toughest part about playing Khanna was that he was drunk throughout,” Sharma said. “To perform in a drunk state, there is a very thin line between going caricaturish and doing it right.”
Reflecting on the film, Sharma shared that the storyline is relatable and mirrors the dynamics of many friend groups. “Every group has a ‘Khanna,’ a ‘Maan Arora,’ a ‘Jainu,’ and a ‘Honey Singh.’ There is madness in how the characters come together on different paths; it’s a very beautiful journey,” he said.
Director Simarpreet Singh further revealed what to expect from the upcoming film. “At some point in our lives, each of us has either been a Khanne or consoled a Khanne. Standing by friends through thick and thin. This film captures those bizarre, shared experiences and crazy memories that strengthen friendships.
“The cast brings these moments to life, making the shooting experience unforgettable. I can’t wait for the audience worldwide to watch this crazy breakup trip called Wild Wild Punjab on Netflix!” he shared.
All in all, as Wild Wild Punjab’s release date nears, prepare for a wild ride with a relatable group of friends on a breakup road trip.
