Recently, netizens were reminded of the controversial comment Zoe Kravitz made about Jaden Smith, and that led to a fresh wave of backlash aimed at The Batman actress. The daughter of musician Lenny Kravitz and actress Lisa Bonet, Zoe Kravitz has also appeared in projects like Big Little Lies, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, and High Fidelity. Meanwhile, Jaden is a rapper, actor, and the oldest child of Jada Pinkett-Smith and Will Smith. Kravitz made the comment in question back in 2013, and it seems to haunt even today.
Here is what Zoe Kravitz said about Jaden Smith and why it is controversial.
What did Zoe Kravitz say about Jaden Smith?
In 2013, while speaking to V Magazine alongside fellow actress Nicola Peltz, Zoe Kravitz reflected on the time she spent with Jaden Smith.
“There were moments that I was hanging out with Jaden and thinking, I can’t believe you’re 14, I have to check myself, like what I say to you,” Kraviz said about her After Earth co-star. “He has so much personality and so much swag, he is so much cooler than I am. And he’s so handsome, I was always like, When you’re older, you know, we’ll hang out…Nope, that’s inappropriate, you’re 14,” she added. (via Just Jared)
Why were Zoe Kravitz’s comments controversial?
At the time of the interview, Zoe Kravitz was a 24-year-old adult, while Jaden Smith, as mentioned above, was 14-year-old minor. Although the comment went largely under the radar at the time, it resurfaced after Kravitz shared several posts on Instagram following the incident involving Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at the 94th Academy Awards on March 27, 2022.
Per Billboard, Kravitz posted a photo of herself on the red carpet at the Oscars and wrote, “Here’s a picture of my dress at the award show where we are apparently assaulting people on stage now.”
According to Buzzfeed News, Zoe Kravitz shared another photo of her at the Oscars afterparty. “And here is a picture of my dress at the party after the award show -where we are apparently screaming profanities and assaulting people on stage now,” she wrote in the caption.
In response to this, social media users dug up several things from Kravitz’s past, including the problematic comment about Jaden Smith. Both the above-mentioned Instagram posts have since been deleted.
Now, Zoe Kravitz has found herself on the receiving end of another bout of adverse social media reactions. This is because of a widely-viewed post on X (formerly known as Twitter), only about two months before the release of Blink Twice, her debut feature as a director.
