Dark Matter Episode 9 became available on Apple TV Plus on June 26, and viewers want the ending explained. They’re curious about what happens to all Jasons in the show’s finale. Based on Blake Crouch’s namesake book, the sci-fi thriller series revolves around Jason Dessen (Joel Edgerton), a scientist living in Chicago. He is ripped from his life and placed in an alternate reality by a version of him. In the course of the season, Jason visits multiple parallel worlds trying to get back to his wife and son. In Episode 9, titled Entanglement, a version of Jason 1, having reunited with his family, must ensure their safety as other renditions of him also return to their original world.
Here is a recap of the Dark Matter finale as well as what happens to Jason 1 and his family, other Jasons, and Ryan of Jason 1’s world.
Where did Jason’s family go at the end of Dark Matter Episode 9?
In the final episode of Season 1, Jason 2 finally has a change of heart after a version of Jason 1 (likely the one that another Jason met at the pub) captures and tortures him. Jason 2 is finally forced to see the ramifications of his actions, including the death of a version of Amanda. He later finds Daniela (Jennifer Connelly), Charlie (Oakes Fegley), and the Jason 1 Daniela chose. Jason 2 gives them his box filled with ampoules. This effectively allows them to choose the reality they want to live in as their current one is no longer safe for them.
When the family arrives at the entrance to the box, the more peaceful variations of Jason are waiting for them. While they all want to reunite with Daniela and Charlie, they have realized that it doesn’t matter. The only things that do matter are Charlie’s safety and the fact that Daniela chose Jupiter Jason.
In the box, Charlie makes the choice of what their destination will be. Like before, the Chosen Jason knows that others will find them if he chooses. While we don‘t see the world the family ends up in, we can speculate on the possibilities. The hopeful and happy look Jason 1, Charlie, and Daniela all have as they step into their new home world, indicates it must a better one.
Charlie seems to have a fondness for the vacation house he helps his family break into in the final episode. Perhaps, he has led them to somewhere similar, so that he and his family can continue living a peaceful and quiet life. After all, this new world likely has its versions of Jason, Daniela, and Charlie. So, the last thing the family probably wants is to meet them. Alternatively, it can even be in the utopian world where Amanda decided to stay behind.
What happens to all Jasons and their worlds?
When Episode 9 ends, Jason 2 and both the peaceful and violent versions of Jason 1 are stuck in Jason 1’s original world. Given that almost all of them have the capability to develop the drug, Jason 1’s versions might access the box in the future. Some will probably try to find Jupiter Jason, Charlie, and Daniela. Meanwhile, others might hope to discover an alternate avenue to happiness.
It is safe to speculate that at least a few will be unable to leave that world and will have to come to terms with their new reality. As for Jason 2, he probably knows that this world is no longer safe for him as well. Thus, he may have saved up at least one ampoule for himself. Having recognized his mistakes, he might return to his own world.
Will Ryan return to Jason’s world?
In the closing moments of the Dark Matter season finale, Ryan makes multiple ampoules of the drug and visits Amanda in the utopian world. Given that he now has the tool to use the box, it’s possible that Ryan 1 might return to the original world. Alternatively, he can go on a journey with Amanda. Crouch’s original book doesn’t have a sequel, so Season 2 is unlikely. However, Ryan 1 and Amanda’s story could have been perfect for exploration in a prospective second season.
