Jujutsu Kaisen: Why Did Geto Turn Evil & Betray Gojo? Explained

Why did Suguru Geto turn evil in Jujutsu Kaisen? Why did he betray Gojo? A lot of things happened in Geto’s life that turned him into a curse user. Here is a guide on why Geto turned evil and betrayed Gojo in Jujutsu Kaisen.

This article will contain spoilers from Jujutsu Kaisen 0 and Season 2.

Why did Geto turn evil in Jujutsu Kaisen?

Geto turned evil after a series of unfortunate events that led him to snap and murder a whole village.

During Gojo’s Past arc when they were students, we see Geto with a kind and calm demeanor. Geto would even lecture Gojo on his attitude, which he saw as impolite. He firmly believed in the duty of the strong protecting the weak. He also said that jujutsu existed to protect the non-jujutsu users.

However, this started to change after Riko Amanai’s death. Riko died in front of him because of a non-sorcerer. When Gojo and Geto were carrying Riko’s corpse out, they were surrounded by cheers and applause from non-sorcerers. Gojo wanted to kill all of them, but it was Geto who said they shouldn’t.

Eventually, Gojo was strong enough to take on missions alone. The same happened with Geto, but he was getting sick of swallowing curses that tasted disgusting. This was a struggle that no one else fully understood, not even Gojo. He started wondering for whom he was doing these things.

He then meets Yuki Tsukumo and learns that curses are created because of non-sorcerers. This conversation, along with Haibara’s death, sends Geto further to the edge. The final straw for Geto was the mission where he saw Nanako and Mimiko. He saw how Nanako and Mimiko were treated terribly by non-sorcerers. Geto reached his breaking point, killed the whole village, and adopted Nanako and Mimiko.

Why did Geto betray Gojo?

It wasn’t necessarily a betrayal. Geto and Gojo’s clashing morals and beliefs led them to pursue different paths and grow apart. Either way, the two still somehow considered each other as their best friend. As we see in Jujutsu Kaisen 0, even as Geto’s dying, he smiles at Gojo and says he should’ve cursed him at the end. In Season 2, we see Mimiko and Nanako talking about how Gojo was Geto’s best friend.

A lot of things happened to Geto that led to him getting depressed and eventually reaching a breaking point. In a way, the jujutsu system also failed him. After all, Geto was just a teenager when all of this was happening.
