Presumed Innocent Episode 4 Ending Explained & Recap: Is Rusty the Killer?

With the recent release of Presumed Innocent Episode 4, fans are eager to know more about its bizarre ending. The latest chapter in this thriller miniseries delves deeper into the mindset of Rusty and his visible foray into madness. The entry of new characters and evidence this time around adds further complications to the mystery of Carolyn Polhemus’ murder. But, what all unfolded in the fourth episode of the limited series?

Here’s a brief recap of the events of Presumed Innocent Episode 4, including explanations about its ending.

What happened at the end of Presumed Innocent Episode 4?

Towards the end of episode four, Nico and Tommy present a new piece of evidence in front of Raymond that leaves the latter speechless. Meanwhile, Rusty ends up losing his calm and pummels an important suspect to the ground.

The episode opens with Tommy prepping Carolyn’s son, Michael, for his upcoming appearance in the witness box. Michael, in his mind, was sure of Rusty’s alleged crime. His belief in Rusty’s guilt becomes stronger when he remembers his mother’s confession about being scared of a colleague.

Elsewhere, Detective Rigo finds a match for the second semen sample in the Bunny Davis case, and Rusty accompanies her to the questioning of this newfound suspect. The duo carefully assesses Brian Ratzer and tries to extract the truth out of him. However, Rusty ends up intimidating Ratzer, which foils their approach. This encounter eventually comes back to haunt Rusty towards the end of Presumed Innocent Episode 4.

At his home, Rusty ruthlessly interrogates Kyle regarding his presence near Carolyn’s house on the night of the murder. While Kyle reveals that he was aware of Rusty’s extramarital affair, his father’s unhinged tone while questioning him gives a glimpse into Rusty’s deteriorating sanity. Barbara, on the other hand, struggles between her individuality and her role as a family woman. Despite her ever-growing internal conflicts, she returns home after Rusty calls her and apologizes.

Things take a turn for the worse when Nico and Tommy reveal that Rusty’s skin has been uncovered from underneath Carolyn’s nails. Raymond and Rusty are astonished to learn of this development, and the latter counters by stating that the evidence has been planted to frame him. These events take a toll on his mental state, and Rusty ends up taking it out on Ratzer when he reaches the Sabich house to confront him.

Did Rusty really kill Carolyn Polhemus in Presumed Innocent?

As of the ending of Presumed Innocent Episode 4, it is unknown who really killed Carolyn Polhemus.

However, with the revelation of new evidence, Rusty finds himself in deeper trouble than ever. The discovery of Rusty’s DNA in Carolyn’s nails is enough to conclusively determine his guilt. While the accused lawyer denies any wrongdoing, discounting his involvement is steadily becoming harder and harder for everyone.

Nevertheless, the introduction of Brian Ratzer has opened the case to new possibilities. His ties to the Bunny Davis case add another name with a legitimate motive to the suspect list.

With four episodes still to come in the miniseries, only time will tell who committed the gruesome crime and why.
