The Shrek franchise continues to expand. Actor Eddie Murphy has revealed that a Donkey Movie, based on his beloved character in the franchise, is currently in the works. If you are wondering when the Donkey Movie is coming out, this is what we have discovered.

Donkey Movie does not have an official release date, but it will likely be announced in the future.
Back in January 2023, following the success of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, Eddie Murphy expressed his desire to star in a Donkey spin-off.
In April 2023, founder and CEO of Illumination Chris Meledandri, who reportedly serves as creative partner on Shrek 5, indicated in an interview with Variety that conversations about a Donkey spin-off had begun. In a June 2024 interview with Collider, Murphy revealed that the project was in development at DreamWorks alongside Shrek 5.
“We started doing Shrek 4 or [Shrek] 5 months ago,” the Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F star said. “I did this, I recorded the first act, and we’ll be doing it this year, we’ll finish it up. Shrek is coming out, and Donkey’s gonna have his own movie. We’re gonna do Donkey as well. So we’re gonna do a Shrek, and we’re doing a Donkey [movie],” he added.
Murphy also clarified that production for the Donkey Movie would start after they were done with Shrek 5. According to the actor, Shrek 5 will come out sometime in 2025. So, the Donkey Movie might premiere in 2026 at the earliest.
Donkey Movie will feature the voice of Eddie Murphy as the eponymous donkey. No information is available yet on the other members of the cast of the animated movie.
Where is Donkey Movie coming out?
Donkey Movie could come out in theaters.
This is because the previous Shrek spin-off, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, came out in theaters and was a massive critical and commercial success. So, it is safe to speculate that DreamWorks Animation will prefer to replicate that success with the Donkey Movie if and when it comes out.
