Yes, Millie Gibson’s Ruby Sunday will likely return in Doctor Who Series 15.

In the Series 14 finale, Ruby meets her birth parents and decides to stay back. She and the Doctor have a heartfelt farewell before the latter departs. Although it may seem that the series itself is saying goodbye to the character, that isn’t the case.

According to Metro, in the BTS of Doctor Who, showrunner Russell T Davies assured the fans that Ruby would return for Series 15. “You’d have to be mad to say goodbye to talent like that and a character like that,” he explained. “This is a pause. I genuinely felt Ruby’s story paused there. She couldn’t get all that information about her family, all that emotional overload and run off in the Tardis. It pauses there.”

Davies subsequently asserted that Ruby was coming back, He shared a pub scene from Series 15 featuring the character. Doctor Who Season 15 has replaced Ruby Sunday with two new companions, at least for the early episodes.

In the upcoming 2024 Christmas special, Nicola Coughlan, arguably most known for her role as Penelope in Bridgerton, will portray the Doctor’s companion. Varada Sethu would replace her in the 2025 series. Although the report by The Mirror introduces some uncertainty in the prospect of Ruby’s return to the show as a companion, Davis’ own words seem to negate that.

According to Wales Online, “A new companion is coming in, but you’ll see the three of them together,” Davis said. “Three people in this TARDIS fighting evil.
