Here is all you need to know.

What happened to Hungary forward Barnabas Varga?

Varga fractured several bones in his face and also suffered a concussion following his collision with opposing goalkeeper Angus Gunn.

Both Hungary and Scotland needed to secure a win in their last group-stage match to keep their hopes of advancing alive. With the game still tied in the 71st minute, a cross directed toward Varga was supplied into Scotland’s box. However, in an attempt to reach the ball, the Ferencváros striker ended up colliding with the rival keeper. Consequently, the match was halted for about 10 minutes, with Barnabas Varga eventually being substituted due to the injury.

In the aftermath of the incident, the Hungarian soccer federation came out to provide details on the striker’s condition. The forward had suffered from multiple broken bones in his face, as well as a concussion. As a result, he will most probably undergo surgery to heal from this. Unfortunately, he is set to miss the remainder of the European Championship should Hungary progress into the knockout phase.

All of Barnabas Varga’s teammates were visibly disturbed by what had happened to him. However, they showed great sportsmanship and made sure to shield the striker while he was being treated on the field. Varga’s side eventually managed to notch a slim victory, thanks to substitute Kevin Csoboth’s injury-time winner.

Compatriot Roland Sallai acknowledged the terrifying nature of the accident in a post-match interview. He also dedicated the win to the prolific striker and admitted that the team was fighting for Varga towards the end. Hungary currently ranks third in their group with a mere three points on the board.
