First announced in August 2022, the film was set to star Kieran Culkin, along with Jesse Eisenberg who also wrote the script. Later, in January 2024 it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival after which Searchlight Pictures acquired the worldwide rights for the film. Soon after, the film received a release date of October 18, 2024.

While the trailer doesn’t reveal much through dialogue, we see cousins David and Benji, played by Jesse Eisenberg and Kieran Culkin respectively, touring across Poland to honor their grandmother’s final wish. The first scene shows them trying to travel by train, avoiding paying for a ticket. This is followed by a montage of scenes from the film that portray their love-hate relationship and the antics they come across during their journey. A Real Pain Plot – what’s the story about?
The plot of the film revolves around cousins David and Benji who are on a tour across Poland to honor their dear grandmother.
David is an uptight man and likes things planned, while Benji is more relaxed and goes with the flow. Their beloved grandmother dies and as a last wish, she sends them on a trip to Poland together. In Poland, David and Benji visit important places from their family’s past, including their grandmother’s childhood home and even a World War II concentration camp. Their old arguments and disagreements come back up, leading them to fight about everything from travel plans to their problems.
