Dark Matter Episode 8 started streaming on Apple TV Plus on June 19 and the ending has sparked fan speculation about whether or not Jason dies. Blake Crouch developed the sci-fi thriller show from his 2016 novel of the same name. The plot revolves around Jason Dessen (Joel Edgerton), who is kidnapped and sent to a parallel world by a different version of himself. As the original Jason, or Jason 1, tries to return home, each of his actions further complicates things. In the penultimate episode of the series, the ramifications of all these actions finally catch up to Jason 1, as multiple versions of him return to the original world.

What happens at the end of Dark Matter Episode 8?
At the end of Dark Matter Episode 8, a version of Jason 1 reunites with Daniela (Jennifer Connelly) and Charlie (Oakes Fegley). However, fans can’t be entirely sure if this is the original Jason 1.
In Episode 8, Jason 1 meets one of his variations at The Village, and their discussion provides an explanation of what is happening. While Jason 1 was in the box, every decision he made created two or more versions of him. Many of their versions died during the journey, but some have made it back to the original world, and now they all want to get rid of Jason 2 and reunite with their family. Both versions of Jason 1 realize that a conflict with each other and other versions is inevitable.
Meanwhile, one variation of Jason 1 attacks Jason 2 at the start of the episode and is killed. This is the same version that the series led fans to believe is the original Jason 1 in the previous episode. While giving Charlie a tour of the university, Jason 2 survives another attack from another Jason.
As things stand by the end of Dark Matter Episode 8, we can’t be entirely sure which Jason 1 we have been following since Episode 1. The narrative focuses on one version of Jason 1 that we know parted ways with Amanda (Alice Braga) in the utopian world. He gets himself arrested so that Daniela has to come and bail him out. When she does, he explains to her what is happening. Although she is skeptical at first, she starts to believe when she tries to call her husband and Jason 2 answers.
Daniela later pushes Jason 1 down the stairs of their basement and escapes with Charlie. She encounters another Jason who has also visited the utopian world and gets into a car with him. When she realizes her mistake, she flees with her son again.
At the end of the episode, she reunites with the version of Jason 1 that told her everything after confirming his identity. After the conversation at The Village, this Jason does a course correction and picks reaching out to Daniela over his desire for revenge. And that plays a crucial role in Daniela choosing him over the others.
Which Jason dies in Dark Matter Episode 8?
At least two versions of Jason 1 die in Dark Matter Episode 8. They perish in separate encounters with Jason 1. Further, a version of Jason 1 says during the conversation at The Village that he killed one like them following an attack.
As mentioned above, Daniela pushes Jason 1 down the stairs of the basement. As she shuts the basement door, Jason 2 seems to be not moving, so there is a possibility, albeit a small one, that he is dead as well.
