Reports of Spaceballs 2‘s development moving forward have made fans wonder if Rick Moranis will be a part of the sequel. Moranis’ Lord Dark Helmet was a main cast member in the original Spaceballs film. A short and bratty enemy of the film’s heroic trio Lone Starr, Barf, and Princess Vespa, he was a parody of iconic Star Wars villain Darth Vader.
So is Rick Moranis’ Lord Dark Helmet coming back for Spaceballs 2 or any other sequel?
Will Rick Moranis return in Spaceballs 2?
Rick Moranis is not confirmed to return in Spaceballs 2 as of writing. It is also currently unknown if any of the original cast members will be involved.
Moranis is known for being selective about the projects he takes on. He had taken a hiatus from Hollywood following 1997’s Honey, We Shrank Ourselves. However, he continued doing voice-over work for various animated projects in the intervening years. In a 2015 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Moranis claimed that he would return to do any film so long as it piqued his interest.
As such, were Rick Moranis to come back for Spaceballs 2, Josh Gad, Mel Brooks, and the team behind the film would need to impress the actor with their script.
Moranis’ last major live-action movie role was in 1997’s Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves. As per Deadline, in 2020, he had signed on to return for Shrank, the newest installment in the Honey, I Shrunk The Kids franchise. However, as of June 2024, there have been no positive updates about this film.
