The highly anticipated Street Fighter movie, based on the classic video game from Capcom, has taken an unexpected turn. Brothers Danny and Michael Philippou have quit their roles as directors of this eagerly awaited film. Their withdrawal from the project has generated significant buzz online. Naturally, fans and industry insiders are now speculating about the reasons behind the Philippou brothers, AKA RackaRacka’s decision.
Here is everything you need to know about the Street Fighter movie and why Danny and Michael Philippou are no longer working on it.
Why aren’t Danny and Michael Philippou directing the new Street Fighter movie?
Danny and Michael Philippou reportedly stepped down from the Street Fighter movie due to scheduling issues.
In April 2023, it was announced that a new Street Fighter movie was in development, with Danny and Michael Philippou in the director’s seat. However, over a year later now, the franchise has lost the two directors. The reports of the departure come just weeks after a logo for the film appeared at Las Vegas licensing Expo.
Scheduling conflicts are believed to be the main reason behind RackaRacka’s departure, per The Hollywood Reporter. Legendary and Capcom were hoping to begin production and filming for the Street Fighter movie sooner than anticipated. However, the Philippou brothers reportedly chose to focus on their project Bring Her Back, instead. Interestingly, it reunites them with A24, the studio behind their horror hit Talk to Me.
Additionally, Danny and Michael Philippou are working on Talk to Me 2, which will keep them busy for the foreseeable future. This shift might end up being more beneficial for the director duo. After all, they are responsible for A24’s highest-grossing horror movie and the third-highest-grossing movie overall.
Meanwhile, Legendary and Capcom are now forced to find someone else who is passionate about adapting the video game, which has already seen two box office bombs. The failures of 1994’s Street Fighter and 2009’s Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li make Legendary’s Street Fighter a tough sell for audiences.
Having been let down twice, fans are now eager to see an adaptation that lives up to the mark. However, currently the project is in search of a new director to take the reigns. ComingSoon will provide an update once more details of the Street Fighter movie are announced.
