Sir Ian McKellen was hospitalized after he seemingly lost his footing and fell off stage while he was performing a fight scene as John Falstaff in the Player Kings production.
The actor screamed in pain after his fall, leading to West End theater staff members rushing to help him. Following the incident, the audience was sent away and informed that the evening’s show had been canceled.
However, as per a theater spokesperson, the 85-year-old actor is fine and “in good spirits.” The spokesperson further revealed that the actor had a scan and medics claimed that he would make a quick and full recovery. As per BBC, he is expected to return for Wednesday’s performance.
According to The Guardian, Tuesday evening’s Player Kings performance was also canceled to allow The Lord of the Rings actor to rest. The play, which began its run in the West End theater in April, will move to Bristol Hippodrome in July.
Some audience members reacted to Ian McKellen’s fall. Among those were Paul Critchley and Sandro Trapani, who both expressed their shock at witnessing it. Trapani also expressed her hope that he would be alright. Meanwhile, another attendee Charlie Johnson took to X (formerly Twitter) to convey his best wishes for McKellen’s speedy recovery.
Ian McKellen, himself, is yet to address how the fall took place from his perspective and whether any pre-existing medical condition contributed to it.
