As Netflix’s fantasy drama series Sweet Tooth ended with Season 3, viewers want to know what happens in the series finale and whether Gus (Christian Convery) and Tommy “Big Man” Jepperd (Nonso Anozie) die. Drawing from Jeff Lemire’s graphic novels, Sweet Tooth presents a dystopian landscape. A pandemic, aka the Sick, decimates humanity. The emergence of human-animal hybrids coincides with this devastation, leading to their ostracization and exploitation as humanity grasps for survival.
Gus, a human-deer hybrid, was born in this world. After the death of his Pubba, Gus sets out with Big Man to find his mother. Their journey ends in season 3, and here is how it happens.
What happens at the end of Sweet Tooth Season 3?
At the end of Season 3, Gus decides to burn the ancient tree that has the appearance of a massive antler, and that in turn stops the further spread of the Sick. However, a human female gives birth to a hybrid child shortly after, indicating that although the Sick is gone, humanity is still set for extinction. The remaining humans accept this act of mercy from Mother Nature and decide to live out their lives in peace. Meanwhile, the hybrids inherit the world and make it their own.
In Season 3, Mrs. Helen Zhang (Rosalind Chao) presents Gus with the greatest test of his youth. Gus and his friends, along with Zhang and her cronies, travel to the ancient tree’s location in the Alaskan cave. Additionally, Zhang wants to get rid of all the hybrids and believes if she soaks the earth in the cave with Gus’ blood, she will accomplish both her goals
This fatalistic hubris ultimately proves to be her undoing. In the series finale, Gus mourns the loss of Birdie (Amy Seimetz), the woman he once thought was his mother. When Zhang stabs Big Man, Gus is finally forced to acknowledge the inherent evilness of humanity.
Ultimately, Dr. Aditya Singh (Adeel Akhtar) redeems himself by not killing Gus and attacking Zhang’s men instead. When Zhang pulls out an axe from the tree, the flowing sap triggers a fresh wave of the Sick. It affects everyone in the vicinity, including Big Man. Desperate to save him, Gus cuts his hand open and places it on the tree. He subsequently has a vision of Pubba, who helps him realize that there is no easy answer in life. The only thing a person can do is leave the world better than how they found it.
The Sick is gone when Gus returns. After saving Gus once more, Dr. Singh dies. It is strongly hinted that Zhang died in the freezing terrain where she was left behind.
Do Gus and Big Man die by saving Gus on Sweet Tooth Season 3?
Gus doesn’t die in Sweet Tooth Season 3; however, Big Man seemingly does.
As Gus and his companions walk away from the cave, it becomes apparent that Big Man will not be able to continue. Gus stays behind with him and tells him their story. The scene then shifts to several years later. An elderly Gus, with Wendy at his side, tells the same story to his grandchildren. The implication here is that Big Man died off-screen. As the series ends, Gus seems to imagine that Big Man didn’t die in Alaska and made his way back home with him.
