Since Furiosa’s introduction in Mad Max: Fury Road, viewers have wondered how she lost her left arm. The film did not cover that part, though director George Miller stated in an interview with Rotten Tomatoes that there was “a big backstory on that.” Speaking to the same outlet, Charlize Theron, who portrayed an older version of Furiosa in Fury Road, said that while Miller had told her what happened, she wouldn’t divulge anything, correctly presuming that it would be explored in the future. With the release of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, it’s finally unveiled how the titular character lost her arm and got a metal prosthetic.
Here are the events that resulted in Furiosa losing her arm and getting a metal prosthetic.
How Furiosa lost her arm in A Mad Max Saga?
Furiosa (Anya Taylor-Joy) loses her arm in A Mad Max Saga during a confrontation with Dementus (Chris Hemsworth) and his biker horde.
In Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, the fifth entry in the Mad Max franchise, the protagonist and her lover, Praetorian Jack (Tom Burke), work for Immortan Joe, the primary antagonist of Fury Road. While driving the War Rig toward the Bullet Farm for a fresh supply of ammunition, the couple becomes involved in a skirmish with Dementus and his gang. It quickly becomes apparent to Furiosa and Jack that they don’t stand a chance, prompting them to try to escape in a car.
Dementus follows them in his monster truck. During the ensuing chase sequence, Furiosa’s left arm becomes trapped between the two vehicles, resulting in severe injuries. When Dementus flips Furiosa’s car, her arm gets effectively crushed.
After catching them, Dementus tortures Jack and Furiosa, until Jack passes away. However, Furiosa, who was hung from her broken arm, opts to cut it off and escapes.
In the final part of the film, Furiosa is back at the Citadel, Immortan Joe’s stronghold. She gathers junk material and builds her iconic prosthetic arm.
