While Sony’s Madame Web bombed at the theaters and was bombarded with poor critical reviews, it has had an explosive start on Netflix. Ever since its debut, it has been among the most-watched titles on the streamer.
Madame Web debuts at number one on Netflix’s Top 10 list
On May 14, Tuesday, Madame Web arrived on Netflix only to take over the streaming space by storm. The film took three months to go through its theatrical run and online rental window. But, it has finally found an audience on Netflix.
Here’s how the film stands on Netflix’s Top 10 charts against other movies streaming on the platform:
- Madame Web
- Mother of the Bride
- Shrek
- El correo
- Shrek Forever After
- The Super Mario Bros. Movie
- Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa
- War Dogs
- Unfrosted
- The Judge
The platform is yet to reveal its viewership numbers. However, the immediate attention of subscribers on Netflix hints that many Marvel fans were interested and waiting to check out the film at no extra cost, despite its horrid critical acclaim.
It ended its theatrical run making $43 million domestically, and $100 million worldwide (via Box Office Mojo). While the box office numbers may not assure a sequel, considering the film’s reported budget of $80 million, its performance on Netflix could save it some embarrassment in the long run.
The official synopsis of Madame Web reads:
“In a switch from the typical genre, Madame Web tells the standalone origin story of one of Marvel publishing’s most enigmatic heroines. The suspense-driven thriller stars Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb, a paramedic in Manhattan who may have clairvoyant abilities. Forced to confront revelations about her past, she forges a relationship with three young women destined for powerful futures…if they can all survive a deadly present.”
Directed by S.J. Clarkson, Madame Web stars Dakota Johnson, Celeste O’Connor, Emma Roberts, and Isabela Merced, along with Golden Globe nominee Tahar Rahim, Mike Epps, and Adam Scott.
