Oldboy English-Language TV Series does not have an official release date, but it will likely be announced in the future.
In April 2024, Lionsgate Television announced that an English-Language television adaptation of Oldboy was in the works. Park Chan-wook, the director of the original film, will develop the series. Although Lionsgate hasn’t revealed where the viewers will be able to watch the series, its in-house network, Starz, is likely a major candidate.
In a statement, Scott Herbst, Lionsgate Television’s executive vice president and head of scripted development, spoke about what the audience can expect from the series. “Park is one of the most visionary storytellers of our generation, and we’re excited to partner with him in bringing his cinematic masterpiece to the television screen,” he said. “This series adaptation of Oldboy will feature the raw emotional power, iconic fight scenes, and visceral style that made the film a classic.”
According to Park, his creative vision for the project aligns with that of Lionsgate. “I look forward to working with a studio whose brand stands for bold, original, and risk-taking storytelling,” he added in a statement.
Previously, Spike Lee made an English-language cinematic adaptation of Oldboy. It stars Josh Brolin, Elizabeth Olsen, and Sharlto Copley and came out in 2013. The original film is loosely based on the namesake manga series by Garon Tsuchiya (writer) and Nobuaki Minegishi (illustrator). If the Oldboy English-Language TV Series goes into production this year, it can come out in 2025.
