Here’s the Fallout TV show’s ending explained, featuring spoilers about what happened. Dive into our breakdown to find out who dies. Also, learn what New Vegas is and how the series sets up its second season.
What happened at the end of the Fallout TV show?
The first season of Amazon Prime Video’s Fallout series ends with Hank escaping the Griffith Observatory while leaving Lucy, Maximus, and the Ghoul behind.
The finale of Fallout revealed the dark truth about Lucy’s father, Hank MacLean, and Vault-Tec. Lucy arrives at the Observatory to deliver the Cold Fusion energy chip. Here, Lee Moldaver revealed that her father was behind the destruction of Shady Sands.
When Lucy’s mother left Vault 33 and took her to Shady Sands, her father took her back and dropped a bomb on the city to remove Vault-Tec’s competitors.
Vault-Tec’s vision to control human civilization involved putting their trusted employees in cryosleep. These employees would only be awakened when a new overseer was required to take control and condition the people in the vaults. Norman MacLean unearthed this truth when he stumbled into Vault 31 and got stuck there.
Hank told Lucy that he had to sacrifice his wife to make Vault-Tec’s vision come true. As a result of his bombing, the destruction of Shady Sands turned Rose MacLean into a decomposing Ghoul.
Maximus led the Brotherhood soldiers to the Observatory, who took down Moldaver’s leftover army. He lets both Lucy and her father out of their cage before Lucy reveals what her father did. But by then, it is too late as her father takes over a T-60 armor and knocks Maximus unconscious.
While trying to reason with Lucy, Hank is shot and injured by Coop the Ghoul, who further reveals that Hank was previously named Henry MacLean. He was an executive assistant at Vault-Tec 200 years ago.
The Ghoul wanted to find out where his wife and child were. But before he could get any answers, Hank escaped. So, he asks Lucy to tag along as he goes after Hank. Before leaving with him, Lucy shot her mother to end her suffering and promised an unconscious Maximus that she’d be back for him.
A wounded Moldaver joins Maximus and activates the Cold Fusion energy to light up Shady Sands before dying.
Believing that he killed Moldaver, the Brotherhood grants Maximus a Knighthood as they take over Shady Sands and Cold Fusion’s infinite energy. Lastly, an injured Hank flies toward a town called New Vegas.
What is New Vegas in Episode 8 of the Fallout TV show?
New Vegas is a city built over the ruins of Las Vegas, where the 2010 video game Fallout: New Vegas is set.
The events of Fallout: New Vegas took place during the year 2281. Since the series takes place in 2296, Fallout Season 2 will likely bring back New Vegas with a few developments. This is also the location where Mr. House took prominence in the Fallout: New Vagas game.
A younger version of Mr. House briefly appeared as the CEO of RobCo in the finale’s flashback sequence. Since he and his company allied with Vault-Tec, Hank likely went to New Vegas to get help from RobCo.
What’s next for Lucy, Maximus, and the Ghoul in Fallout Season 2?
In Season 2, Lucy, the Ghoul, and CX404 will follow the trail of Hank MacLean, while Maximus will continue as a Knight of the Brotherhood.
Since the Ghoul wants to find his family and Lucy likely wishes to avenge her mother, they will most likely follow Hank. So this will mean that they will also probably end up in New Vegas at some point. Maximus will also most likely take a similar path and reunite with Lucy.
