Here’s the X-Men ’97 episode 3 ending explained and recap featuring spoilers about what happened. Dive into our breakdown and find out who the second Jean Grey is.
What happened at the end of X-Men ’97 Episode 3?
X-Men ’97 episode 3 ended with the cloned Jean Grey choosing her new identity and Storm being approached by Forge, who offered to get her powers back.
Plenty happened in X-Men ’97 episode 3, “Fire Made Flesh”, as the second Jean Grey who arrived at the X-Mansion turned out to be the real Jean. The one who shares a child with Scott turns out to be a clone of Jean, created by Mister Sinister.
While Sinister was set up as a boss villain for the season, the Goblin Queen turned out to be the antagonist in this episode. Eventually, Jean broke her out of Sinister’s control. But they were too late to save little Nathan Summers as Mr. Sinister sought to make him invincible by exposing him to the techno-organic virus.
As a result, Scott and Jean had to send him to Bishop’s future timeline where its cure probably exists. It is from here that Nathan Summers might grow up to become Cable (who appeared in Season 1 of the original X-Men animated series).
Lastly, episode 3 ended with the cloned Jean Grey leaving the X-Mansion and choosing to live her life as “Madelyne Pryor.” Meanwhile, Storm is spotted in a bar in Texas where she is approached by an old friend of Charles Xavier, Forge. He offers to help her get her mutant abilities back after she lost them in episode 2.
So, we should expect Storm’s mutation to be retriggered in the coming episodes while Magneto continues to lead the X-Men in a quest to track Mister Sinister.
Who is Madelyne Pryor, aka the Goblin Queen?
Madelyne Pryor is the clone of Jean Grey who took the title of the Goblin Queen.
X-Men ’97 stays true to the comics in a way that Mr. Sinister was revealed to be the creator of Madelyne Pryor. His goal was to create a genetically superior mutant by orchestrating Madelyne and Scott’s union to produce a child.
Being Jean Grey’s clone, she possesses her key abilities including telekinesis and telepathy. She can siphon psychic energies to boost her powers. But the X-Men comics lore also saw her bargaining with the demon S’ym, which granted her powerful dark magic and sorcery to go along with her psychic abilities.
In X-Men ’97, similar magic abilities were given to her by Mister Sinister. Now, it will be interesting to see whether she plays a significant role in the upcoming episodes.
