Created by Kenya Barris, Peter Saji, and Tracee Ellis Ross, mixed-ish is an ABC period comedy series. The second spin-off and prequel to Barris’ Black-ish, mixed-ish is a loose adaptation of the early life of Barris’ former wife, Dr. Rania Barris. Set in the 80s,’ the plot follows Rainbow Johnson as she grows up as a member of a mixed-race family. Season 1 premiered on September 24, 2019, and Season 2 on January 26, 2021. Curious about whether there will be a third season? This is everything we have found out.
Here’s all we know about mixed-ish Season 3 and whether or not it’s coming out.
Is there a mixed-ish Season 3 release date?
There is no mixed-ish Season 3 release date as the show was canceled after two seasons.
In May 2021, before the Season 2 finale aired, ABC announced mixed-ish’s cancellation. The announcement came after Black-ish was greenlit for the eighth and final season. ABC also decided not to renew For Life, Call Your Mother, Rebel, and American Housewife for another season.
Series star Tika Sumpter subsequently posted on Instagram, “It’s never the end. Ever. Onward and continually upward. Love y’all!”
The cast of mixed-ish includes Tracee Ellis Ross as adult Rainbow Johnson, Arica Himmel as Rainbow “Bow” Johnson, Tika Sumpter as Alicia Johnson, and Mark-Paul Gosselaar as Paul Johnson. Christina Anthony as Denise, Ethan William Childress as Johan Johnson, and Mykal-Michelle Harris as Santamonica Johnson also appear in the show.
Why mixed-ish Season 3 might not be happening
Mixed-ish Season 3 isn’t coming out because, as mentioned above, ABC canceled the series after Season 2. ComingSoon will provide an update if circumstances change and there is an official announcement about the second season.
The official synopsis for mixed-ish reads:
“Rainbow Johnson recounts her experience growing up in a mixed-race family in the ‘80s and the constant dilemmas they had to face over whether to assimilate or stay true to themselves.”
