Netflix: What Does the ‘You Are Bugs’ 3 Body Problem Tweet Mean?

Subscribers are wondering what the phrase “You Are Bugs means after Netflix‘s post on X (formerly Twitter) featuring it went viral on the internet. Here is everything you need to know.

Why is Netflix tweeting “You Are Bugs” on Twitter/X?

Netflix is tweeting “You Are Bugs” to promote the new series 3 Body Problem.

X (formerly Twitter) is not the only place this cryptic caption has gone viral as Netflix has put up posts on various other social media channels, such as Instagram, to celebrate the launch of 3 Body Problem.

“You Are Bugs” has not only stayed in online marketing. It has also made its way into various landmarks in real life.

As mentioned by Netflix’s official companion site Tudum, this ominous but viral phrase has appeared on digital screens in areas with heavy traffic like Times Square in New York City, and Southern Cross Station in Melbourne, Australia.

What does “You Are Bugs” mean in 3 Body Problem?

The phrase “You Are Bugs” refers to an omen for the San-Ti’s intentions to wipe out humanity.

As mentioned by Tudum, the phrase “You Are Bugs” harkens back to 3 Body Problem’s narrative opening in Beijing, China. Here the militant youth of the Chinese Cultural Revolution chanted the slogan “Root out the bugs!” This expressed their wishes to get rid of any infiltrators of the Communist revolution, like scientists and academics.

However, as shown in Episode 4, environmentalist-turned-billionaire Mike Evans referred to those trying to bring down his organization as “pests” in his communication with the extraterrestrial San-Ti, associating humanity with bugs in their understanding.

Then in Episode 5, the San-Ti avatar told Thomas Wade and Jin Cheng in a VR game that the San-Ti had been hijacking human science and technology to dominate humanity upon their arrival in 400 years. Then the end of the episode showed every screen in the world broadcasting the cryptic “You Are Bugs” message, implying the San-Ti’s intentions to exterminate humanity.
