Spider-Man 4 appears to finally be moving forward as Sony looks for a director to helm the project. Has Justin Lin been hired to bring Tom Holland’s next solo outing to life? Why didn’t Jon Watts return after directing the Homecoming trilogy? Here’s everything you need to know.
Is Justin Lin Directing Spider-Man 4?
Justin Lin is reportedly being eyed to direct Tom Holland’s Spider-Man 4.
Familiar Hollywood insider Jeff Sneider recently stated that Justin Lin is in the running to take on Sony and Marvel’s next Spider-Man solo outing.
After leaving Fast X and its sequel, Justin Lin has been looking for another project to helm. He was attached to a One-Punch Man live-action adaptation at one point. However, those plans didn’t come to fruition.
So, with Sony and Marvel looking to take things forward with Spider-Man, it’s possible that Lin could be the one to succeed Jon Watts.
Why Jon Watts isn’t returning to direct Tom Holland’s Spider-Man 4
Jon Watts was initially courted to direct Fantastic Four instead of Spider-Man 4, but he ultimately ended up leaving both projects.
After Watts decided to leave Fantastic Four as well, Deadline reported that it was because he wanted a break from the superhero genre after directing three Spider-Man movies back to back. He said in a statement:
“Making three Spider-Man films was an incredible and life-changing experience for me. I’m eternally grateful to have been a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for seven years. I’m hopeful we’ll work together again and I can’t wait to see the amazing vision for Fantastic Four brought to life.”
Recently, insider Daniel Richtman reported that Drew Goddard was a director that Sony was looking at. However, Lin has now seemingly taken the lead. Whether he gets officially hired for the project remains to be seen.
