HBO Max Latin America originally announced the project in June 2022. A year later, speaking at an event in Annecy, director Juan Jose Meza-Leon described this new iteration of the legendary vigilante as more Bruce Lee than Arnold Schwarzenegger. “We had to focus on the man underneath the armor,” he explained.
At the same event, producer José Carlos García de Letona spoke about the measures they took to ensure the film was historically authentic. “We wanted to be true to the story we were telling,” he said. “We hired an expert on Aztec matters, who was advising us every step of the way.”
Peter Girardi, the executive vice president at Warner Bros. Animation, echoed the sentiment. “The word you are going to keep hearing is authenticity,” he explained. “Even though it’s a fantastical story. We have done different interpretations of Batman in the past, specifically in Japan, so it’s a format we were familiar with. But it’s a whole new story, set in that [specific] time. It wasn’t about saying: ‘Oh, he has a shark repellent now.”
Along with its own version of Batman, the world Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires has its renditions of supporting characters. Two-Face is Hernán Cortés, Alfred is Acatzin, Poison Ivy is Forest Ivy, Catwoman is Jaguar Woman, and the Joker is Yoka.
In February 2024, the first official image for the film was reportedly released. Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires will likely come out in late 2024 at the earliest.
