Fans have long wondered if a National Treasure 3 is in development and if Nicolas Cage would return in the new movie. Here is all that is known at the moment.
Is National Treasure 3 happening?
No, National Treasure 3 is not happening.
Nicolas Cage recently did an exclusive interview with Screenrant. The 60-year-old actor who played treasure hunter Ben Gates in the first two National Treasure films. When asked by the interviewer about the chances of a National Treasure 3 happening, he bluntly replied in the negative:
“Here we go! See, you’re the one that brings these things up and they go out and they eclipse everything else. No, there is no National Treasure 3. If you want to find treasure, don’t look at Disney, okay? It’s not there.”
Talk of another National Treasure film had been building up since January 2020. This followed a period of development hell between 2008 and 2020. It was reported by various sources such as Variety that a third film had been moving forward in Disney with a script from Chris Bremner.
However, Cage denied the possibility of a third film and future installments happening two years later during a Reddit AMA.
Rumors of a third National Treasure only escalated with the release of the Disney+ series continuation National Treasure: Edge of History. The series did not feature Cage’s Ben Gates but featured his friend Justin Bartha’s Riley Poole and Harvey Keitel’s FBI agent Peter Sadusky in guest roles.
Justin Bartha also addressed the possibility of a third film in a Variety interview back in 2022. This followed his guest appearance in Edge of History, where he optimistically said that there was a possibility of a third film happening at the time.
