After the first weekend, the Kung Fu Panda 4 box office numbers are in. So, people wish to know how it performed. Did it beat Dune: Part Two and come anywhere close to the past three Kung Fu Panda movies? Here’s everything you need to know.
How much money did Kung Fu Panda 4 make at the box office?
Kung Fu Panda 4 reportedly opened with $58.3 million at the domestic box office.
According to Variety, the fourth Kung Fu Panda installment managed to open at number 1 as Dune 2 took the number 2 spot, going into its second weekend. Dune 2 saw just a 44% drop, which is considered impressive for such a film, and added $46 million to its $157 million domestic total.
But Kung Fu Panda 4 deserves all the glory this week as it performed way above its initial predictions, which only ranged between $30 million to $39 million domestically. It did as well as the first Kung Fu Panda movie, which opened with $60 million in 2008. Also, it performed way better than the last two outings as KFP2 brought in $47 million and part 3 brought $41 million in their opening weekends.
At the moment of writing, Kung Fu Panda 4 has made $80 million worldwide. But its international numbers are expected to grow bigger when the movie releases in other parts of the world in the coming weeks.
Is Kung Fu Panda 4 a flop or a success?
Kung Fu Panda 4 is likely to be a success because of its domestic opening and proven international record of the past.
The following list showcases how much the previous three Kung Fu Panda movies made by the end of their run in North America:
- Kung Fu Panda – $215 million
- Kung Fu Panda 2 – $165 million
- Kung Fu Panda 3 – $143 million
But all of them got glory overseas. Here’s what the global box office numbers look like for all three previous movies:
- Kung Fu Panda – $632 million
- Kung Fu Panda 2 – $665 million
- Kung Fu Panda 3 – $521 million
With a significant domestic opening, Kung Fu Panda 4 is likely to outdo the last two movies of the franchise domestically. But since KFP is a globally proven brand, Part 4’s overseas releases in the coming weeks could ensure another $500 million – $600 million overhaul, if not more.
Additionally, there is no other big animated movie releasing until The Garfield Movie at the end of May. So, it’ll likely be a success, similar to all the previous KFP movies.
