Toho Animation Studio and OLM developed the historical fiction anime TV series from the namesake light novel series written by Natsu Hyūga and illustrated by Touko Shino. The plot revolves around Maomao, the eponymous apothecary of the story. At the start of the story, Maomao lives in the pleasure district with her father and helps him run his apothecary business. Everything changes when soldiers forcefully bring her the palace. Maomao ends up saving the lives of two princes and immediately becomes the imperial apothecary.
The official synopsis for The Apothecary Diaries reads:
“Maomao lived a peaceful life with her apothecary father. Until one day, she’s sold as a lowly servant to the emperor’s palace. But she wasn’t meant for a compliant life among royalty. So when imperial heirs fall ill, she decides to step in and find a cure! This catches the eye of Jinshi, a handsome palace official who promotes her. Now, she’s making a name for herself solving medical mysteries!”
