“Superman: Legacy” has added Wendell Pierce to the cast as Perry White, but some people are wondering who this character is. Here is all you need to know about this classic Superman supporting character.
What is Perry White in Superman?
Perry White in Superman is the editor-in-chief of the Metropolis newspaper The Daily Planet.
In DC Comics, particularly those featuring Superman, Perry White is the editor-in-chief of Metropolis newspaper The Daily Planet. This makes him the boss of Superman’s alter-ego Clark Kent, Lois Lane, and Jimmy Olsen. White is known for holding high ethical and journalistic standards, which makes him a very tough, but fair-minded, boss.
Perry White was created for the radio serial, “The Adventures of Superman,” where he was voiced by Julian Noa. The serial first aired on February 14, 1940. The character appeared in the second episode of the radio show titled “Clark Kent, Reporter,” Perry White was then integrated into DC Comics continuity later that year appearing in Superman #7, which was published in November 1940.
In both DC Comics and other media related to it, Perry White is known for uttering the famed catchphrases, “Great Caesar’s Ghost” and “Don’t call me ‘chief.'”
Before Wendell Pierce, White has been portrayed by multiple actors in live-action DC media. Jackie Cooper played the character in 1978’s “Superman” starring Christopher Reeve and its sequels. Frank Langella took on the role for “Superman Returns.” Laurence Fishburne then played the character in the DC Extended Universe films “Man of Steel” and “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice.”
Pierce is the second black actor to play White after Laurence Fishburne.
In television, Perry White was played by John Hamilton in “Adventures of Superman” and Lane Smith in “Lois and Clark: The Adventures of Superman.” Michael McKean played the character in “Smallville” and Paul Jarrett took on the role in “Superman & Lois.”
