After watching the Borderlands movie trailer, viewers have been left wanting to know more about the film’s big bad villain, Atlas. Is he a part of the game or a new character created solely for the movie? Here’s everything you need to know about Atlas, and who plays him in Borderlands.
Who is Atlas, the Borderlands movie villain?
Atlas, the main antagonist of the Borderlands film is the universe’s most influential person, being an arms manufacturer and a business tycoon.
Edgar Ramirez plays Atlas, and his official description states that he is “a business titan and arms manufacturer and the most powerful person in the universe.” Not a lot is known about his character. But he will task the film’s lead, Lilith (Cate Blanchett), and her companions to find his daughter as she holds the key to universe-changing power.
The first trailer for Borderlands teases his ruthless persona as he asks his soldiers to “kill them all”, possibly pointing toward Lilith’s crew. So, it’s possible that instead of handing his daughter over to him, the allies of Lilith will decide to protect her from him.
Is Atlas in the Borderlands games or a new character?
Atlas is an original character in the Borderlands movie as in the games, a weapons manufacturing corporation is named “Atlas” instead of a person.
It is an interplanetary megacorporation that manufactures and sells everything ranging from small weapons to massive spaceships. It has a huge presence in the original Borderlands, Tales from the Borderlands, Borderlands 3, and New Tales from the Borderlands.
But the corporation has likely become the inspiration for Edgar Ramirez’s new villainous character. A lot of mystery and expectation surrounds him as he is an unknown character even to longtime fans. He is presumably going to present a major threat to Lilith’s crew and the entire Universe.
But it will be interesting to see if he turns out to be more of a conventional action movie villain who only seeks more power or more of a standout character with a deeper motivation, like the MCU’s Thanos.
