Ridley Scott, the director of the first Blade Runner film (1982), revealed in an interview with BBC Radio in November 2021 that the script for the pilot and the pitch bible had already been written, adding that the series would have 10 hour-long episodes. The project officially went into development in February 2022.
Jeremy Podeswa (Game of Thrones) was initially supposed to direct the first two episodes of the series but was later replaced with Jonathan van Tulleken (The Aliens). Developed as a collaborative effort between Scott Free Productions, Amazon Studios, and Alcon Entertainment, the series is slated to begin production in April 2024, after suffering a delay due to Hollywood strikes.
Any news about casting in the series seems to have been kept strictly under wraps. If everything goes well, Blade Runner 2099 can potentially debut sometime in 2025.
