The Apothecary Diaries is based on the light novel series written by Natsu Hyūga and illustrated by Touko Shino. The story takes place in a fictional rendition of the Ming-era China. It follows Maomao, a young woman who works with her father as an apothecary in the pleasure district. After she is forcefully taken to the palace, Maomao ends up saving the lives royal princes and earning a place for herself at the place.
