Based on the namesake light novel series written by Keisuke Makino and illustrated by Karei, Irina: The Vampire Cosmonaut is a science fantasy anime TV show. The plot is set in a world quite similar to ours. After the conclusion of World War II, two superpowers emerged, the Union of Zirnitra Socialist Republics (UZSR or the Zirnitra Union, the fictionalized rendition of the Soviet Union) and the United Kingdom of Arnack (UK, fictionalized rendition of the United States). As they set their eyes on space as the new frontier of conquest and colonization, the UZSR decides to turn a vampire named Irina Luminesk into their first cosmonaut.
Season 1, comprising 12 episodes, originally aired in Japan between October 4, 2021, and December 20, 2021. If you are wondering whether there will be a second season of Irina: The Vampire Cosmonaut, this is what we have discovered.
Here’s all the Irina: The Vampire Cosmonaut Season 2 release date information we know so far, and all the details on when it is coming out.
Is there an Irina: The Vampire Cosmonaut Season 2 release date?
Irina: The Vampire Cosmonaut Season 2 does not have an official release date, but it can be announced in the future.
As of February 2024, Irina: The Vampire Cosmonaut hasn’t been renewed for the sophomore season. Makino and Karei’s light novel series is a completed work with seven volumes, published between 2016 and 2021. The anime reportedly covers up to the second volume, so there is plenty of material for the development of Season 2. Unlike live-action and Western animated series, the intermediate period between seasons of anime TV shows can stretch as long as several years. As a result, the possibility of the second season can’t be ruled out.
The voice cast includes Megumi Hayashibara as Irina Luminesk, Koki Uchiyama as Lev Leps, Hina Kino as Anya Simonyan, Satoshi Hino as Mikhail Yashin, Mikako Komatsu as Roza Plevitskaya, Takaya Hashi as Slava Korovin, Masaki Terasoma as Lieutenant Victor, Kikuko Inoue as Natalia, and more.
The official synopsis for Irina: The Vampire Cosmonaut reads:
“The first astronaut in human history was a vampire girl.
Following the end of World War II, the world-dividing superpowers, Federal Republic of Zirnitra in the East and United Kingdom of Arnack in the West, turned their territorial ambitions toward space. Both countries have been competing fiercely for development.
East history 1960. Gergiev, the chief leader of the Republic, announces the manned space flight program Project Mechtat (Dream), which, if successful, would be the first feat for humankind. At that time, Lev Leps, a substitute astronaut candidate, is ordered to perform a top secret mission. The “Nosferatu Project”—a program that experiments with vampires prior to manned missions—will use Irina Luminesk as a test subject, and Lev is to monitor and train her.
Even while trifled by the walls of the race and ego of the nations, Lev and Irina share a genuine sentiment as they aim for the universe.”
