With Argylle arriving in the theaters, people are looking into its box office numbers and wondering whether it has flopped. Could the film turn out to be a big bomb for Apple TV Plus? Here’s all you need to know about its box office performance and the reasons behind that.
How much money has Argylle made at the box office?
Argylle only opened with $17 million domestically and around $35 million globally.
Matthew Vaughn’s latest spy thriller was initially predicted to open between $20-$30 million, but it pulled in even less at the domestic box office. The film was reportedly produced on a $200 million budget, and another $50-$100 million could have been spent on its marketing.
It needs to perform at least as well as Vaughn’s first two Kingsman movies, which ended up topping $410 million globally each time. Even then, the chances of breaking even might be slim, considering that the theater chains also keep around 50% of a film’s box office intake.
But with the kind of opening Argylle got, the chances of it making its money back are next to impossible. It’s eventually looking to be a big flop for Apple TV Plus, and there are multiple reasons why that is the case.
Why has Argylle ‘bombed’ at the box office?
Argylle has bombed because it did not receive support from critics and fans due to its bait-and-switch plot that doesn’t reflect the film’s marketing.
Despite some fun action sequences and a stellar cast involving Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Rockwell, Henry Cavill, John Cena, Dua Lipa, Samuel L. Jackson, Bryan Cranston, and many other big names, the film arguably failed to garner interest due to two key reasons.
The poster and almost the entire marketing campaign of Argylle sold it as a Henry Cavill-John Cena buddy comedy spy thriller. Meanwhile, the real leads of the film were Bryce Dallas Howard and Sam Rockwell.
The ‘bait and switch’ idea was supposed to subvert fan expectations, providing them with several shocking twists to enjoy. But this didn’t work in the film’s favor as many who went in to watch a Henry Cavill action thriller weren’t satisfied as he was barely in the film.
The second reason is the audience and critics’ score. As soon as the review embargo lifted with poor reviews from the critics, word spread like wildfire that Henry Cavill and John Cena weren’t the leads. Furthermore, the film got a 34% rotten score on Rotten Tomatoes and a low C+ from CinemaScore. It proved that neither the audience nor the critics supported or cared for the film.
