A Matthew Vaughn directorial venture, Argylle is a spy action comedy film. It tells the story of spy novelist Elly Conway, who suddenly finds her real world is being intruded upon by the world she created. In July 2021, several outlets reported that Argylle would be part of a planned trilogy. Since then, Vaughn has confirmed multiple times that he wanted to make three movies in the Argylle franchise. In October 2023, while speaking to Josh Horowitz, Vaughn even hinted that Argylle, Kingsman, and a yet-to-be-revealed third franchise were all part of a shared universe.
Made on a $200 million budget, Argylle has a 35% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Speaking to Total Film, Vaughn offered some hints on what the plot of the prospective second and third films would be. “Book one is about: how did Argylle become a spy? That will be the next film,” he said. “And then Argylle 2 is – I don’t want to give it all away, but there’s the young Argylle, and that becomes Henry, because Henry loves the idea of doing a proper Argylle movie as well.”
Ultimately, it all depends on how the first film performs. If it is commercially successful, the second and third projects will likely go forward. Vaughn said as much during his conversation with the Inside Total Film podcast and GamesRadar+. “Well, you know, don’t count your chickens before the eggs blah, blah, blah,” he said. “I touch wood when I say this – there’s a universe that we could be doing in this film but people have to like the first one.”
The filmmaker added, “This has been a very enjoyable experience and one that I’d love to continue playing in, and I know the actors would love to continue. So that is up to the public, if they give us a thumbs up, we will give them another one. If they give us a thumbs down, we will just, you know, imagine what it would have been like.”
