After Netflix’s price increase in late 2023, people are wondering what the streaming giant is changing with its plans in 2024. With the addition of the ad-supported plan in many countries, users wonder if Netflix is taking away the No Ads plans. So, here are all the changes Netflix is making to its plans in 2024.
Is the Netflix no-ads plan being removed?
Netflix has decided to retire its basic $11.99/month no ads plan in some countries, but people will still be able to subscribe to the ad-supported plans and the Standard and Premium No Ads plans.
At the moment of writing, Netflix offers the following monthly plans to subscribe:
- $6.99 (Standard with ads)
- $11.99 (Basic without ads) [Only to old subscribers]
- $15.49 (Standard without ads)
- $22.99 (Premium without ads)
Among these, Netflix already didn’t allow new or returning subscribers to choose the Basic No Ads plan of $11.99/month. It was only available for old subscribers.
But now after the recent Investors Call in January, Netflix execs told the investors that the company will be retiring its basic no ads plan in some countries where the ad-supported plan exists. This will first start with Canada and the UK and come into effect in Q2 2024!
What Netflix plans are changing in 2024?
From April 2024, Netflix will retire its basic no-ads plans in the UK and Canada.
As per Netflix:
“The ads plan now accounts for 40% of all Netflix sign-ups in our ads markets and we’re looking to retire our Basic plan in some of our ads countries, starting with Canada and the UK in Q2 and taking it from there.”
So, after seeing a massive jump in the subscribers of Netflix’s ad-supported plan, the company is slowly phasing out its basic ad-free plan from Canada and the UK. Subscribers from those countries will have just the Standard with ads plan, Standard without ads plan, and Premium without ads plan to subscribe for. This is also expected to be carried out in other countries in the future.
Instead of the plan, Netflix prepares to scale up its subscriber base with ad-supported plans by offering new upgrades.
