The Taylor Swift CO2 emissions controversy goes back to a 2022 article written by Yard, a sustainability marketing firm.
In Yard’s breakdown of the top 10 celebrities who are CO2 offenders due to their excessive private usage back in 2022, Taylor Swift came up in the first position. According to Yard, Taylor Swift was the worst offender and most carbon-polluting celebrity of 2022 as she took 170 flights since January, having amassed 22,923 minutes (382 hours or 15.9 days) of being in the air. Her total flight emissions from the year amounted to 8,293.54 tonnes, which is technically 1.184.8 times more than emissions from an average plane user and flyer.
Due to this, Taylor Swift received criticism and backlash online from many users, who criticized her excessive flying. Her representative then immediately spoke to The Hollywood Reporter in 2022 to set the record straight by claiming that her jet was regularly loaned out to other individuals.
As per Carbon Credits, Swift remained the most carbon-polluting celebrity as of 2023, as she made regular flights to see the Kansas City Chiefs games of her boyfriend Travis Kelce, in the middle of her Eras Tour at the time, both of which only contributed to more flying and CO2 emissions.
An Instagram post that tracked Swift’s private jet usage showed she had taken 12 flights via her Dassault Falcon 7x and Dassault Falcon 900 as of January 2024 to see Kelce. Thus, she emitted a total of 138 tonnes of CO2.
Is Taylor Swift’s private jet bad for the environment?
Taylor Swift’s private jet by itself is not necessarily bad for the environment, however, her overuse of it for her trips is bad for the environment.
