Taylor Swift has been appearing at more and more NFL games, and people like former NFL Hall of Fame coach Tony Dungy believe she’s having a negative impact on the sport. Here’s what he said about the singer and the comments he made during a recent interview.
What did Tony Dungy say about Taylor Swift?
Tony Dungy said that Taylor Swift is “disenchanting people with sports now.”
In an interview with Fox News (via USA Today), Tony Dungy explained why he thought that so few of the Gen Z generation describe themselves as “avid sports fans.”
When Dungy was asked specifically about Taylor Swift’s impact on the NFL, Dungy said that her involvement was “disenchanting people with sports now.” He went on to say:
“There’s so much on the outside coming in. Entertainment value and different things that take away from what really happens on the field.”
Taylor Swift continues to appear at Chiefs games in support of the team and her boyfriend, Travis Kelce. As a world-famous singer, the spotlight is unsurprisingly trained on her every move.
Despite Dungy’s comments, Swift’s appearances at NFL games have undoubtedly made more people aware of the sport. With Swift’s worldwide appeal, countries that don’t play American football will be likelier to tune in and watch games. While they might primarily be watching for a glimpse of Taylor Swift, they will still be soaking in much of the American football gameplay.
Taylor Swift has yet to respond to Tony Dungy’s comments, and it’s possible that she never will. At the time of writing, Swift is expected to appear at more NFL games to support her boyfriend.
