Here’s Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Episode 10’s ending explained featuring spoilers. Take a look at our breakdown and see what happened, who died, and whether we get a setup for season 2 in the finale titled “Beyond Logic”.
What happened at the end of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Episode 10 season finale?
Towards the end, Cate, Keiko, and May make their way back to Earth from Axis Mundi with the help of Hiroshi and Kentaro’s work at Apex Cybernetics.
The season finale was full of reunions as after episode 9, Keiko and Cate met with May and Lee Shaw, who was finally united with Keiko after 56 years. But for Keiko, it had only been 57 days since she entered Axis Mundi in 1959.
The series didn’t go deep into explaining time dilation. But Keiko stated that the gravitational distortion in Axis Mundi led to some warping of spacetime. As the title of the finale suggests, time travel in this series does seem ‘Beyond Logic.’ But in simpler terms, we could believe that time passes slower in Axis Mundi than it does on Earth due to gravitation distortion.
The entire episode saw Keiko, Lee, May, and Cate making an effort to return to Earth in the Monarch vessel that Lee used to travel to Axis Mundi in 1962. But just as they are about to leave, Ion Dragon attacks them. Fortunately, Godzilla arrives just in time and throws the Ion dragon through the gateway to create a portal for the humans to escape.
But not all 4 of them make it back as Lee Shaw sacrifices himself to save his love, and the other girls. As a result, Keiko, Cate, and May return to Earth, arriving at the research station of Apex Cybernetics in Skull Island.
We find out that it’s 2017, and 2 years have passed since Cate and May fell into Axis Mundi. Their return was made possible because of Kentaro and Hiroshi’s work at Apex. But right after Keiko reunites with her son and grandchildren, Kong makes a cameo to end Season 1!
Does Lee Shaw die in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Episode 10?
Lee Shaw gets left behind in Axis Mundi but we don’t see a body. The fall from the vessel could have killed him. But he could also be alive in the realm between Earth and Hollow Earth.
Shaw thanked Keiko for everything and sent her, May, and Cate back home. While he was left behind and could have died, we never saw his dead body and it’s possible that he could still be alive in Axis Mundi somehow.
Whether Keiko and others at Apex are willing to travel back into Axis Mundi to extract him remains to be seen. But it is possible that we saw the last of Lee Shaw in the series.
How the Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season finale sets up Season 2
Bringing back Keiko and the others in 2017, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters sets up a second season to tie it in with Kong: Skull Island and Godzilla vs. Kong.
The series has been about the establishment of Monarch from the 1950s to 2015. It has filled in a lot of gaps while introducing us to new concepts in the MonsterVerse. It also featured Apex Cybernetics, which could be explored in a potential Season 2.
The next batch of episodes might give us the lead-up to how Apex created Mechagodzilla in Godzilla vs. Kong. It could further explore Skull Island, and how Kong ended up in Apex’s containment unit. Whether it also ties into Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire remains to be seen.
