According to director Brad Bird, due to the shortened and hectic production schedule of the second film, he and his collaborators had to leave out several plot ideas from the final product. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the filmmaker reflected on the prospects of the third film. “We storyboarded, and we designed characters, and they’re really good! Some of them were really funny and cool and explored certain things…” he said.
Bird added, “You know, you never say never, because there might be an opportunity to use it. Maybe the idea shows up in a different film. There was an idea I had for an animated version of The Spirit that I ended up using in The Iron Giant. You never know how these things are going to get repurposed. There were a lot of ideas that we had on this film that could be [used]… whether it’s another Incredibles film, or something else.”
Producer John Walker also didn’t rule out the possibility of a third film, before humorously adding, “And if past is prologue, it’ll be another 14 years — and a lot of people will probably need oxygen to make a third one.”
Actors involved in the franchise, including Samuel L. Jackson (who voices Lucius Best / Frozone) and Sophia Bush (who voices Karen / Voyd), have expressed their desire to return for the third film. In February 2023, Disney’s CEO Bob Iger announced that both Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios would focus on developing sequels or expanding franchises, which bodes well for the chances of the third film.
