Directed by David Ayer, Bright is an urban fantasy film streaming on Netflix. The plot is set in a version of the modern world where humanity co-exists with fantastical creatures. In Los Angeles, police officer Daryl Ward and his new partner, Nick Jakoby, the first orc police officer in US history, must protect an elf girl named Tikka, who possesses a magic wand, an incredibly rare and powerful device.
Bright premiered on December 13, 2017. Even though it was largely panned by the critics, the response from Netflix viewers was positive. If you are wondering whether there will be Bright 2, this is what we have discovered.
Here’s all we know about Bright 2 and whether or not it’s coming out.
Is there a Bright 2 release date?
There is no Bright 2 release date as the film was canceled.
As mentioned above, despite the criticism Bright received from professional critics, the film was quite popular among Netflix viewers, which likely played a key role when the streaming giant greenlit a sequel. Will Smith and Joel Edgerton were supposed to reprise their roles as Daryl Ward and Nick Jakoby, and David Ayer was returning to direct. The script was to be written by Evan Spiliotopoulos. The production reportedly suffered delays due to Smith’s busy schedule. In May 2020, it was reported that filmmaker Louis Leterrier was in talks with Netflix to direct the sequel. However, these plans were ultimately scrapped following the incident between Will Smith and Chris Rock at the 94th Academy Awards in 2022.
While Bright 2 didn’t happen, an anime spin-off of the original film, titled Bright: Samurai Soul, was released on Netflix on October 12, 2021.
The official synopsis for Bright reads:
“In an alternate present-day where magical creatures live among us, two L.A. cops become embroiled in a prophesied turf battle.”
