Directed by Robert Rodriguez and based on the Gunnm (Battle Angel Alita in English) manga series by Yukito Kishiro, Alita: Battle Angel is set in a post-apocalyptic Earth and tells the story of the eponymous female cyborg as she struggles with amnesia after she is found disembodied in a scrapyard and put back together by scientist Dr. Dyson Ido.
The cyberpunk action film premiered on January 31, 2019, and made $405 million at the global box office against its $150–200 million budget. If you are wondering when Alita: Battle Angel 2 is coming out, this is what we have discovered.
Here’s all the Alita: Battle Angel 2 release date information we know so far, and all the details on when it is coming out.
Is there an Alita: Battle Angel 2 release date?
The Alita: Battle Angel 2 release date could arrive by 2026 at the earliest.
Robert Rodriguez and producer James Cameron have maintained over the years that Alita: Battle Angel could be expanded into a story spanning multiple sequels, and the source material allows that narrative scope. Moreover, the appearances of Edward Norton, Michelle Rodriguez, and Jai Courtney in the first film were supposed to set the premise for the sequel.
Despite this, the prospective film remained in development limbo for a long time. In December 2022, while speaking to each other on Variety’s Directors on Directors, Rodriguez and Cameron made a virtual blood oath to develop the sequel. Jon Landau, the other producer of the first film, confirmed to Screen Rant in April 2023 that the sequel was happening, adding that Rodriguez was returning to direct and Rosa Salazar was returning to portray the eponymous character.
Landau also reflected on how Avatar: The Way Of Water would influence Alita: Battle Angel 2. “I think what we’ve learned from Avatar is how much more facial nuance and subtlety that we can get into characters that we want to be emotional and emote that are humanoid,” he said. “Alita would not have been possible, but for what we did on Avatar. Avatar: Way of Water would not be what it is but what we did for Alita.”
About three months later, Cameron indicated that he was involved in the development of multiple Alita projects. If Alita: Battle Angel 2 goes into production next year and given how much time these types of films generally spend in post-production, it can potentially come out in 2026 at the earliest.
This date is an estimation based on the information we have at the time of this writing. ComingSoon will provide an update to this story once we receive official details.
The Alita: Battle Angel synopsis is as follows:
“When Alita awakens with no memory of who she is in a future world she does not recognize, she is taken in by Ido, a compassionate doctor who realizes that somewhere in this abandoned cyborg shell is the heart and soul of a young woman with an extraordinary past.”
