The film is slated to serve as a sequel to the 2021 release Army of the Dead and is part of the expanding Army of the Dead franchise. Is there an Army of the Dead 2 release date?
Army of the Dead 2’s release date could arrive by late 2025 at the earliest.
The success of Army of the Dead effectively ensured that there would be more projects set in the same universe. A prequel, featuring Matthias Schweighöfer’s Ludwig Dieter, came out under the title Army of Thieves on October 29, 2021, with Matthias also performing the directorial duties. An animated TV series prequel, titled Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas, was also in development, but Snyder revealed in March 2023 that the series had been stalled due to technical reasons.
The Man of Steel director first spoke about an Army of the Dead sequel in May 2021. “I’m knocking on wood right here, but if there was an opportunity for a sequel, Shay [Hatten] and I know exactly what happens with that,” he said at a junket interview. “We’ve done a long and hard look at where that movie would go, and it’s pretty crazy.”
The filmmaker continued, “Now, of course, if we were to do a sequel to this, it continues the zombie story. It takes it even further.” In October 2021, the title of the upcoming film was revealed to be Planet of the Dead. Snyder also hinted in the same month that Gwendoline Starr, portrayed by Nathalie Emmanuel in Army of Thieves, and Dieter would appear in the upcoming sequel, despite the fact that the latter is seemingly killed in Army of the Dead.
In a December 2023 interview with GamesRadar+, Snyder gave updates on the project. “My idea for Army 2 is Planet of the Dead, which is a much more – [it] scales in a crazy way, so super excited about it,” he said. “Right now, obviously I’m trying to run parallel courses with these two monsters [the other being the Rebel Moon universe], but [I’m] really excited that people are excited to see more from the Army universe because I love it.”
The first film spent several years in development hell before it was acquired by Netflix in January 2019, and production began in July of that year. Army of the Dead premiered on May 14, 2021. If the same timeline is maintained for the sequel and if filming begins next year, Army of the Dead 2 can come out in late 2025 at the earliest.
In the GamesRadar+ interview mentioned above, Synder explained how far along they were into the development Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas, indicating that it could be revived in the future. Previously, Snyder told Total Film that Rebel Moon and Army Of The Dead were part of the same universe.
