Wonka Filming Location: Where Was the Movie Filmed & Set?

With the arrival of Wonka, fans are wondering about the film’s setting and filming locations. Where was the movie shot? Was it all just on a studio set or did the filming also take place Here’s all you need to know about the production of Wonka.

Where was Wonka filmed?

While most of Wonka’s production took place in Warner Bros Studios in Leavesden, Hertfordshire, quite a few scenes were also filmed in Bath, Oxford, Lyme Regis, St Albans, and London in the UK.

Throughout Wonka’s production, multiple soundstages were created at Warner Bros Studios in Leavesden, Hertfordshire, to film most of the movie. But many crucial scenes were also shot in the following locations within the cities of the UK:

  • St Paul’s Cathedral in London
  • Bridge of Sighs in Oxford
  • Mapledurham in Berkshire
  • Verulamium Park in St. Albans
  • Rivoli Ballroom in Brockley
  • Lyme Regis in Dorset
  • The Colonnade in Bath

Outdoor locations like Lyme Regis helped in the world-building by portraying the town’s harbor. The Bridge of Sighs was also spotted in the film’s Giraffe sequence. Meanwhile, indoor places such as St Paul’s Cathedral were used to portray places such as the Chocolate Cartel’s base.

Where is Wonka set?

The town where Wonka’s boat arrived was unnamed, but it was presumed to be 1930s London.

The film didn’t give us a specific location for where Wonka arrived to set up his base or where he took on the Chocolate Cartel. But considering that a lot of the filming took place in and around London, UK, we could presume that Wonka showcased a fictional recreation of 1930s London.

It’s also possible that similar to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Wonka’s town wasn’t named intentionally, to make us assume that the film occurs in an unnamed town in England.
