Michelle and Barack Obama’s new Netflix movie is Leave the World Behind, which arrived on December 8, 2023.
The film is based on Rumaan Alam’s 2020 novel with the same title. The thriller brings a post-apocalyptic world to life. It features Julia Roberts as Amanda Sandford and Ethan Hawke as Clay Sandford, who play the parents of Charlie Evans’ Archie Sandford and Farrah Mackenzie’s Rose Sandford. Together, the family goes on a vacation, which gets interrupted by Mahershala Ali’s G. H. Scott, and his daughter Ruth Scott, played by Myha’la.
The following official synopsis of the film further reveals why the couple interrupts the Sandford family’s vacation:
“A family vacation on Long Island is interrupted by two strangers bearing news of a mysterious blackout. As the threat grows more imminent, both families must decide how best to survive the potential crisis, all while grappling with their own place in this collapsing world.”

Both Barack and Michelle Obama were Leave the World Behind’s executive producers, as their production company ‘Higher Ground’ produced the thriller.
Leave the World Behind was filmed under Obama’s ‘Higher Ground Productions’ banner. Furthermore, director Sam Esmail also revealed that the former president had a few pointers to give him as feedback on the script.
Speaking with Vanity Fair, Esmail revealed how invested and influential Obama was in the narrative of the film. Not only were the character interactions of the film inspired by Obama’s family, but the ex-president also helped ground the film to reality.
Here’s what Esmail said about Barack Obama:
“He had a lot [of] notes about the characters and the empathy we would have for them. I have to say he is a big movie lover, and he wasn’t just giving notes about things that were from his background. He was giving notes as a fan of the book, and he wanted to see a really good film.”
So even though Obama himself doesn’t show up in the film, it’s needless to say that he played an important role in telling the story of the latest Netflix flick.
