May December‘s ending left viewers confused by what they saw transpire on screen, and they now have a lot of questions about what happened. Here is the ending explained with spoilers.
Does Elizabeth end up fully understanding Gracie?
Elizabeth has her understanding of Gracie changed after Gracie tells her that Georgie’s claim of Gracie having been molested as a young child by her elder brothers was made up.
At the end of the film, during the graduation ceremony of Charles and Mary Atherton Yoo’s high school graduation, Elizabeth shows up and appears to have fully gotten into Gracie’s character and personality. However, Gracie approaches Elizabeth and asks whether or not she fully understands her.
Elizabeth claims she understands Gracie, but soon Gracie pulls one final trick from her sleeve and states that Georgie’s claim of Gracie having been molested by her elder brothers as a child was false, revealing that she knew of the private exchange between Elizabeth and Georgie. This makes Elizabeth quietly furious as she has now lost all the understanding she thought she had regarding Gracie.
What does the scene between Gracie and the fox symbolize?
The scene between Gracie and the fox supposedly symbolizes Gracie’s understanding of Elizabeth as the intellectual predator she is and the threat she poses to Gracie and her reputation.
Gracie goes to the woods with her shotgun and dogs to hunt unwelcome predators near her property and soon locks eyes with a fox, which makes Gracie recognize herself in the animal and also figure out Elizabeth for the supposed intellectual predator that she is and the threat she could pose toward Gracie’s reputation.
Did Georgie or Gracie lie to Elizabeth about Gracie’s abuse?
It is difficult to determine whether Georgie or Gracie herself lied to Elizabeth about Gracie’s abuse at the hands of her brothers as they both had their agendas.
Georgie told Elizabeth what he told her as he wanted to be a music supervisor in Elizabeth’s film and hoped she could make it happen. Gracie on the other hand, acted as if she could not forget the abuse as she often spoke about her brothers.
