Zack Snyder recently commented about the possibility of uniting with James Gunn. Now, fans wish to find out if he’ll give DC another go with a The Dark Knight Returns live-action adaptation. Is that his next project after Rebel Moon? Here’s all you need to know about his DCU prospects.
Is Zack Snyder Directing The Dark Knight Returns for James Gunn’s DCU
While Zack Snyder recently stated that he’d only want to return to DC to direct a The Dark Knight Returns movie, that isn’t one of the projects James Gunn has planned for now.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Snyder revealed that he called James Gunn to “wish all the best for him.” He also said, “I told him I wanted it to work.” To this, Gunn simply replied on Threads saying, “Like I said many months ago, when I shared that he did this, Zack is a good guy.”
But when he was asked about returning to DC, Snyder said that he would only return if Gunn invited him to tackle a true adaptation of Frank Miller’s “DARK KNIGHT RETURNS.” But no deal has been made between the two directors at the moment of writing.
Among the upcoming DCU projects, Gunn has already slated “The Brave and the Bold” to be his Batman movie. Besides that, Matt Reeves is coming up with The Batman 2 as an “Elseworlds” DC movie in 2025.
Since there’s already enough happening with two different Batmen, Zack Snyder’s vision isn’t expected to come true. If it were to happen, then The Dark Knight Returns would likely be an R-rated film taking place in the “Elseworlds” section instead of James Gunn’s DCU.
But it’s worth noting that Snyder already gave us a loose adaptation of that story with Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. So, another take on it may not considered soon, if at all.
Will Zack Snyder continue the Snyderverse after Rebel Moon?
Both Zack Snyder and James Gunn have confirmed that the SnyderVerse is over. So, Snyder will not be switching back to DC after Rebel Moon.
In the past, the DC Studios co-president stated that it is impossible to sell off the SnyderVerse to Netflix. On top of that, Snyder recently confirmed that the SnyderVerse is done. He is focused on establishing a new universe with his two upcoming Rebel Moon movies. After that, he is more likely to return for Army of the Dead 2 instead of a DC project.
