Agatha: Darkhold Diaries brings a new MCU character to the forefront, Rio Vadal. Aubrey Plaza brings the character to life. But who is this green witch and how powerful are she and her potential coven? Here’s all you need to know.
What are green witches in the MCU?
Seemingly an original concept, Green Witches will be introduced in MCU’s upcoming series, Agatha: Darkhold Diaries, with Aubrey Plaza playing the first Green Witch, Rio Vadal.
The MCU has introduced multicolored witches including the Violet Witch, Agatha; the blue Witches, Agtha’s mother Evanora and her coven; and the red Scarlet Witch, Wanda. Now, Agatha: Darkhold Diaries is taking another step toward completing the “Witch Rainbow” by bringing in the Green Witches, among other colors.
Not much is known about the Green Witches yet. But it has already been reported that Aubrey Plaza’s character, Rio Vadal, will be the first Green Witch. She is an original character created for the MCU who will be Agatha’s ex-lover, and possibly the villain. Her character is presumed to be based on the Emerald Warlock Dian from Marvel comics, who fought Wanda.
Whether more Green Witches appear in Darkhold Diaries remains to be seen. But since Rio Vadal is labeled as the first of those, she could have started her own Coven after getting separated from Agatha. They might even be the “Coven of Chaos” that the original title of the Agatha series teased.
Considering that her sorcery will be green in color, it’ll be interesting to see if her magic would somehow tie in with Loki’s.
How powerful are green witches?
The full extent of the Green Witches’ power isn’t known yet. But we can be sure that they are capable of sorcery and witchcraft which makes them immortal.
Since she seems to be inspired by Emerald Warlock Dian, Rio Vadal’s powers could also be similar to him.
In the books, Dian wields the magic of Chthon’s sister, Earth Mother Gaea. So, Vadal’s magic could derive its powers from Earth and Mother Nature. Furthermore, she might also have Dian’s other abilities such as telekinesis, power absorption, and power bestowal through her sorcery.
We will get more clarity on her strength compared to Agatha and Wanda when Darkhold Diaries arrives next year.
