Squid Game: The Challenge fans want to know if the show is scripted and fixed, with the winner already decided. Or, is it totally unscripted, with players all having the same odds of winning? Here’s all you need to know.
Is Squid Game: The Challenge scripted and fixed?
Squid Game: The Challenge producers confirmed that the reality show is mostly unscripted with unpredictable outcomes based on how people perform. However, they also stated that a few “fake elements” were added to amplify the intensity.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, executive producers Stephen Lambert, Stephen Yemoh, John Hay, and Toni Ireland talked about how they inspired the series from the original “scripted” K-drama and planned for the games and tests. But they also revealed how real The Challenge actually is.
However, the executive producers confirmed that some moments and fake scenes were added to intensify the drama with sneaky editing tricks and camera work. The contestants were also given a choice to choose how they’d react to their elimination.
Is the winner of Squid Game: The Challenge decided in advance?
Netflix claims that Squid Game: The Challenge is not scripted or pre-decided, but many former contestants who got eliminated claimed that the show’s results were predetermined.
As mentioned above, the reality show had a few fake elements added in for dramatization. But, as per Netflix, the outcomes of the tests and games weren’t already decided. Everyone participated to compete and win the biggest prize money a game show ever offered, and only one of them went on to win the title.
In an official statement to Rolling Stone, Netflix and the game show creatives revealed:
“Any suggestion that the competition is rigged or claims of serious harm to players are simply untrue.”
However, a few eliminated contestants, including contestant 332, Ashley Yoder, and contestant 299, Spencer Hawkins, claimed on their social media accounts that the show was predetermined.
Rolling Stone’s report from February 2023 also had several statements from former players suggesting that story arcs for certain contestants were already decided, and a few others were allegedly given microphones that didn’t work as they were inconsequential to the series.
