Money Heist Berlin is Netflix’s next most anticipated upcoming series. But how is it related to the original? Is it a prequel or a sequel to the first five seasons of Money Heist? Does it take place somewhere in between? Here’s all you need to know.
Is Netflix’s Berlin a sequel to Money Heist Season 5?
No, Netflix’s Berlin is not a sequel to Money Heist Season 5. Nor does it take place between Season 1 and 2.
Parts 1 and 2 were a joint story, leading to Andrés de Fonollosa’s demise, aka the titular Berlin, towards the end of Season 2. So, the upcoming Berlin series cannot occur at this time.
Is Netflix’s Berlin a prequel to Money Heist?
Yes, Netflix’s Berlin is a spinoff prequel of the original Money Heist show. It takes place long before Money Heist Season 1.
Money Heist creator Álex Pina revealed the following about the upcoming spinoff, talking about its timeline:
“It’s a trip through the golden age of the character [Berlin] when he robbed around Europe crazy in love.”
The series will be filled with tension, travel, white-collar crimes, romance, and comedy for a change. In it, we’re going to see Andrés de Fonollosa in the prime of his stealing abilities as he pulls off some extraordinary heists before the big one that he attempted along with the Professor.
Pedro Alonso returns as the titular character, and the latest Berlin trailer also confirmed that Itziar Ituño will be back as Raquel Murillo from her younger days. Apart from them, we’ll see a bunch of new faces, including Tristán Ulloa as Damián, Michelle Jenner as Keila, Julio Peña as Roi, Joel Sánchez as Bruce, and Begoña Vargas as Cameron.
Berlin’s official synopsis reads:
“The plan: to steal €44 million — in one afternoon. From the world of Money Heist, comes BERLIN.”
