The Hunger Games Prequel Box Office Prediction: Will It Flop or Succeed?

With The Hunger Games prequel, The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes approaching its release, fans of the franchise are looking at its box office projections. Will the film replicate the original movies’ success, or will it bomb? Here’s all you need to know.

How much money is The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes predicted to make?

As per Box Office Pro and Deadline, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes is tracking to have a 38-$50 million domestic opening and a total between 97-$157 million.

Box Office Pro’s long-range projections stated that The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes will open with 38-$50 million domestically. Furthermore, it’ll go on to make 97-$157 million in total in the domestic market. Additionally, Deadline also reported that it is predicted to make around $50 million on its opening after accounting for its pre-ticket sales.

Jennifer Lawrence’s Hunger Games movies were major success stories at the domestic and global box office. But with the current Hollywood dynamics, the latest prequel isn’t looking to turn in similar numbers domestically and worldwide. However, it may not be a failure for Lionsgate either.

Will The Hunger Games Prequel movie succeed or flop?

With an estimated budget of $100 million, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes could succeed if it performs according to its current projections.

As per Deadline, the estimated production budget of the film is around $100 million. Considering that its cast wasn’t allowed to promote the film for most of the time due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, its marketing budget wouldn’t be huge either. So, there is a strong chance for it to turn a profit.

Assuming that around 50-$60 million was spent on its marketing, it will need to turn in around $300 million or above globally to become profitable. After all, the theater chains also take a cut between 40-60%.

So, with actors now being allowed to promote the film right before its launch, the movie could become profitable after accounting for the money it will make on digital HD sales after its theatrical run. But it could also flop if its second-weekend intake faces a huge drop. A clear answer will be revealed once the film hits theaters.
