Captain Marvel (2019)
This is the most important MCU project viewers need to see before The Marvels as it introduces the primary protagonist Carol Danvers and details how she received her impressive powers and became Captain Marvel. It also shows the start of Danvers and Nick Fury’s close friendship, Danvers’ familial relationship with Monica Rambeau, and Danvers’ strong ties to the Kree Empire, all of which will be important plot points touched upon in The Marvels.
Avengers: Endgame (2019)
Although the original six Avengers comprised of Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk, Thor, Black Widow, and Hawkeye are the focal points in the story, Captain Marvel plays a key role, in particular at the beginning of the film where she rescues Tony Stark from deep space and at the end where she destroys Thanos’ ship and helps keep the Infinity Gauntlet from him.
WandaVision (2021)
While WandaVision primarily revolves around Wanda Maximoff and her unintentional manipulation of Westview, it also introduces an adult Monica Rambeau as a major character, where she is depicted as an agent of her mother’s organization S.W.O.R.D. One of WandaVision’s subplots also focuses on Rambeau and how she receives her powers. Additionally, the show’s mid-credits scene serves as a direct setup for The Marvels.
Ms. Marvel (2022)
Ms. Marvel is a required viewing experience for those who want to see The Marvels as it introduces one of the film’s primary characters, Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel, and details how she receives her powers, her dynamic with her family, and how she learns to become a superhero. Additionally, Kamala’s mystical bangle, introduced and explained in the show will play an important role in The Marvels.
Secret Invasion (2023)
While Carol Danvers, Kamala Khan, and Monica Rambeau do not appear in this. The series is important as it further establishes the connection between Nick Fury, who will return as a supporting character in The Marvels and the Skrulls, and also sets up the events of the film in its ending, wherein Fury and his wife Priscilla/Varra go to space to attend a negotiation between the Skrulls and the Kree.
